Good Books

Does anyone have any good books to recommend?

James is starting school next week and I have a feeling he'll be doing a lot of studying in the evenings.  So, I need to have something to do that's quiet and won't wake Hannah up.  I'd love any suggestions.

I am currently reading a book called "Better" - it's an interesting non-fiction book about pros and cons of healthcare. I think it is really interesting, but I'm not sure if other people would or not. I just got another book from the library called "The Geurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". I haven't read it yet but I've heard from a lot of people it's really good. This summer I read Hellen Keller's autobiography and was quite fascinated by it. I read A Tale of Two Cities and liked it, too, but I really like Dickens. It takes a while to get into his books sometimes though. And Les Miserables is one of my favorites. Man, I read a lot of boring-sounding books. lol. Oh well, there you have it. My book life seems a lifeless place! Haha!
Good luck with everything while James is at school!

Hmmmm.. I have read a bit this summer but can't remember most of them! I've read the "Guernsey Literary....." that Elise mentioned in the comment above and really liked it. I also read one called "The Apothecary's Daughter" that I really liked as well. Good luck!

If you haven't yet you have to read the Hunger Game series. They are intense attention grabbers. Jordan an I both loved them and couldn't put them down. The third and final book comes out in a week. Guernsey is a fabulous book. Also, the Peace Giver is a great book (or so I have heard) I haven't read it yet but there is a part in it about Abigail in the Bible and that is where I got my Abigail's name from.

Ok, this is probably going to be waaaay more information than you wanted, but I have read a lot of good books since graduating and being employed only part-time, so here goes:
I agree with Elise on Better, or anything by Atul Gawande. He has a really interesting perspective.
The Guinnea Pig Diaries was an interesting book about a guy who turns his life into a series of experiments, like living all the biblical laws for a year.
Nothing to Envy is a nonfiction book about life in North Korea from the Korean War to the present. I really liked it because somehow I never learned anything about North Korea in school.
The Healing of America is nonfiction about the health care systems of other countries and how they compare to the US. Sounds boring but it really was very enlightening.
I also liked The Bonesetter's Daughter, even though I am not a big Amy Tan fan.
And I just read a couple of comic books from the Get Fuzzy series, which are nice easy reads and pretty funny too.
As for authors I am a fan of books by Alexander McCall Smith, particularly the Number One Ladies Detective Agency series and the 44 Scotland Street series. I also recommend anything by Malcolm Gladwell (Outliers, etc.) or Robert Fulghum (All I need to know I learned in Kindergarten, etc.)
There is also a website called whatshouldireadnext.com that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't but if you type in the name of a book you liked it will recommend other books that are similar to that one. I like it when it is up and running.
Hope that helps and that your local library has at least a few of the books people have mentioned here:)
